KW-IRS and KWASU have inaugurated a 7 man technical committee saddled with the responsibilities of actualizing closer collaboration between the two organisations.
The technical committee came to life when the Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Professor Muhammad Mustapha Akanbi SAN and top management of the University paid an interactive visit to the Chairman of Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), Mrs Sade Omoniyi.
Professor Akanbi in his opening speech said the visit was not only to show appreciation for the earlier courtesy call paid by the Chairman KW-IRS to his Office, but also to present a list of requests and areas of possible collaboration between the two state establishments.
Professor Akanbi used the opportunity to call on the State Government to cede the Agboji Dam to KWASU. The dam located close to Malete, which can be used as a training and research facility, will also ensure regular water supply to Malete town and KWASU Campus, thereby reducing the perennial water scarcity which the area experiences during dry season, he said.
The Director of the Institute of Professional Studies and Continuous Education KWASU, Dr. Mubarak Sanni, while highlighting areas where KWASU can train and develop Staff of KW-IRS on Taxation and Policy Advocacy, revealed that the University has an existing collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
He also revealed that KWASU is almost commencing a degree program in Taxation, (Bsc. Taxation). To enhance the credibility of the program and showcase its corporate social responsibility, Dr. Mubaraq urged the Chairman of KW-IRS to endow a Professorial Chair in Taxation in the University.
Dr. Mubarak requested that a tax committee should be set up to explore ways in which KWASU can enjoy some infrastructural tax credit allowance. The tax allowance he said will help the institution finance crucial and basic infrastructures.
In her response, Mrs Omoniyi described KWASU as a university of note that has a lot to offer in terms of taxation. Offering a B.Sc in taxation will further compliment this advantage she said.
Mrs Omoniyi who supported the creation of a Professorial Chair also muted the idea of a technical committee to be set up and charged with drawing up areas of collaboration between KW-IRS and KWASU.
The Chairman of the revenue collection agency however noted that KW-IRS while being the sole agency for the collection of taxes in the state, is more focused on advocacy.
She therefore pledged to lend a voice of support on behalf of KWASU to the state government, urging the management to “properly prioritise urgent needs of the University”.
The Technical Committee has the Director of KWASU Business School, Professor Adeyemi as its Chairman; Dr. Mubaraq Sanni, Director Institute of Professional Studies; Dr. Mustapha AbdulRahman, Director KWASU Investment and Consultancy; and Mallam Abubakar Muhammad Sani, Ag. Bursar as members.
