The Vice-Chancellor Kwara State University, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi SAN has reiterated his commitment to ensure financial sustainability and maximize the efficient use of University resources to improve on the socio-economic wellbeing of the university. He made this known while playing host to notable media personalities at the maiden edition of the bi-monthly media parley, in his office at Kwara State University, Malete on 1st June 2020.
Professor Akanbi stressed that he will ensure financial sustainability and maximize the efficient use of University resources and facilities, taking advantage of opportunities to grow income while managing risk effectively.
The University don stated that his administration will focus on four major mandates which include the provision of a conducive learning environment for students; promotion of policy-oriented research; community development and entrepreneurial initiative; and ensuring financial sustainability and maximizing the efficient use of University resources and facilities.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the covid-19 pandemic has posed a major challenge to the institution and the community, stressing that the institution has devised measures to help curb the spread of the disease by engaging in the mass production of KWASU face masks and hand sanitizers.
Professor Akanbi said a lot of classes with a large number of students will be conducted online. He expressed that having students in a classroom where half of the class are hanging by the window will become a thing of the past in KWASU. Students will be able to access materials for such courses online to make learning more conducive for them.
On the issue of IGR, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that it is his desire to increase the IGR portfolio of the institution, stating that KWASU currently possesses the manpower and structure to meet this goal. He stated that he inaugurated a Revenue Generating Board to play a regulatory role and perform oversight functions on 17 newly created and revitalised Internally Generated Revenue Centers with the mandate to make the University financially sustainable and independent. He plans to raise the IGR portfolio of the institution without having to increase the school fees.
On accreditation of some courses, the University helmsman disclosed that the state government gave the institution seventeen million nairas to help hasten the accreditation of the school law program, stressing that the institution appreciates the State Government and promises to use the funds judiciously.
Similarly, Professor Akanbi assures all that no effort will be spared in the course of making both the Baruten and Osi campus functional before the end of his tenure. He also stated he has made consultations with the community leaders of both communities and disclosed that the campuses will soon be put to use for aggressive farming businesses.
He stressed that promoting agro-allied businesses is a core mandate of his administration and pledges to leave no stone unturned to ensure every household in Kwara state has a taste of KWASU products. KWASU product will be a force to reckon within the market, he reiterated.
On conflict resolution, the Vice-Chancellor said he has been able to mediate between the two dissenting labour unions on campus, stressing that they are all committed to promoting KWASU to greater heights and he intends to work with them to move the Institution forward.
On Aeronautical Engineering, Professor Akanbi stated that KWASU is one of the first institutions in the country to run Aeronautical Engineering and the institution intends to sustain and build on its capacity to do more. Furthermore, he disclosed that a new Centre has just been established: Centre for Aviation Management and Logistics, which will cater for the dynamic nature of the aviation industry.
The Vice-Chancellor while appreciating the journalists for their time and patience, stated that his media parley will be held bimonthly to afford him the opportunity to have a heads up on current happening and also to reach out to the world on the remarkable achievements of the institution.
